Four Welsh photographers & filmmakers hike to Quiraing on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, on a mission to capture an elopement; laughs, fights & epic bangers ensue. 42,500 steps later…
When the team here at Fire & Ice say we like to go the extra mile, we mean it! Over an unforgettable 5 days, trekking approximately 19 miles, we had the honour of capturing every magical moment of Natasha & Donald’s elopement across the majestic landscapes of the snowy Scottish Isle of Skye. From their beautiful hand-written letters that brought a tear to every eye, to a cinematic snow-kissed mountaintop ceremony, Fire & Ice’s expert team of wedding photographers and cinematographers had a plethora of opportunities to capture the love-laced bond between this beautiful couple – all we needed now was a good pair of shoes!
BEHIND THE SCENES EPISODE
The Newlyweds
Our beautiful couple started with the oldest of fashions – love at first sight! First sharing a glance at a pub quiz in their Glasgow home, Natasha and Donald quickly bonded and knew there was something special between them. After a few camping adventures with a group of friends, the two adventured off on their own for a cycling first date around Falkirk, before a romantic seafood dinner. Before long, Donald summoned his Scottish bravery and proposed to Natasha on New Year’s Eve, only to be met with a return proposal a few days later! Still sharing their adventurous spirit, this fearless pair revel in hiking and camping trips together, but weathered bones must rest eventually, and in their quieter moments our trekking couple relax with a shared love for cooking and unwinding over board games.
One Epic Journey
The 11 hour journey from our base in Cardiff to The Isle of Skye was only the start of this adventure – our award-winning photography team grabbed the Sony A7Riii and A79ii, equipped with 35mm and 105mm lenses, along with an armoury of EG Smoke Bombs and flares; our cinematography team knew the usual Sony A7Siii wouldn’t quite be enough, so brought the AVATA Inspire DJI II drone too, ready to capture the goliath landscapes from epic aerial angles.
Before even checking into our accommodation, we scouted the local scenery and captured as much of the natural, untainted beauty as we could. Using a Rhino ARC II for some steady, panning time lapses, and the AVATA DJI Inspire II for eagle-eye landscape shots, the team grabbed over a mighty 500GB of footage from establishing shots alone – equivalent to a Word document with approximately 3 MILLION pages! Setting off on day two, the team knew it was time to highlight Natasha & Donald’s story and capture their free-range spirit in a narrative-driven set of films. After shooting more of the setting, it was time to meet our beautiful couple and start to plan for the big shoots to come.
With the slopes of Old Man of Storr, Quiraing and the breathtaking Scottish mountains as a backdrop, Natasha & Donald’s elopement couldn’t have been a more cinematic moment for our epic photography & videography teams to capture…or so we thought! Seemingly scripted by the elements, as our loving pair declared their vows to each other, heavens opened and released a flurry of snow, giving our cinematography teams the final flavour of natural, classic beauty to undertone their films. Natasha in a flowing red traditional Indian dress and Donald in classic Scottish attire made for a picture-perfect pair for every frame of photography, and with the natural wonder of the Scottish Highlands pulsing through every shot, the videography team had everything they needed to make every moment a movie scene.
