Love is in the air (and so are our drones) for an engagement session that would take Fire & Ice’s award-winning wedding cinematography to new heights – literally!
THE SAVE THE DATE FILM
THE COUPLE
Hannah and Ollie’s romance started on the classic side – a romantic first date in a restaurant – but quickly skyrocketed the next time they met when Ollie took Hannah to the skies in his very own plane, soaring over York Minster for an evening that would launch them into all the years to come. On a romantic weekend getaway, just beyond a trail of stepping stones that led to a quiet island, Ollie asked the big question on one knee, surrounded by red roses and with champagne ready to be popped: the old ways are the best ways!
THE PLAN
For this cloud-nine couple, the team decided to create a ‘Pearl Harbor’ inspired cinematography experience, shot in an aircraft hangar and framing the couple alongside Ollie’s very own plane – Fire & Ice turned the hangar into a film set and set sights on a sunrise epic that would capture the absolute essence of Hannah & Ollie’s romance. With pillars of natural dawn light breaking into the hangar, endless opportunities presented themselves to either light or silhouette the couple, giving each frame its own distinct shape, colour and aesthetic.
WATCH THE BEHIND THE SCENES
Branching out to the neighbouring fields of the York countryside, photography took its lead with an array of options for movie poster level shots that Hannah & Ollie could savour for a lifetime together – we used white TP40 EG Smoke Bombs to create rays through the sun-dappled trees for some extra effects, layering against the natural light to create dazzling engagement photography that could only be Fire & Ice’s! The ever adventurous pair even took to new depths, posing themselves under a waterfall for some of the most cinematic photography they could’ve hoped for, and the Fire & Ice wedding photography team were armed and ready to capture every gorgeous frame.
The Fire & Ice wedding videography team had documented every moment they needed on the ground, but of course, the sky’s the limit… maximum effort! Our (mostly) fearless Josh jumped into the plane with the happy couple, capturing the joy and wonder of flying, and the timeless landscape scenery of York Minster–travelling back in time with Hannah & Ollie as they re-lived one of their earliest memories as a high-flying duo.
Josh describes his experience: “It was all pretty nerve-wracking, because I’ve never been in a small plane like that; I had to trust in Ollie’s pilot skills and try to keep calm enough to get the important shots, or the flight wouldn’t have been worth it. But we got the shots and it was definitely worth it, and it was such a beautiful view up there.”
We needed to simulate the plane being in the sky to film scenes of Hannah & Ollie co-piloting, so we used a Rotolight Anova Pro 2 to mimic sunlight streaming through the windows in a controlled environment for filming, passing it in arc shapes over the plane to create a banking flight effect. You can see all these incredible ideas at play in Hannah & Ollie’s engagement video here.
WORDS FROM THE COUPLE
With shoots as ambitious as this one, we love to make sure we’ve given our daring couples everything they want and deserve in their experience and final product, and the fearless Ollie had only the highest praises for our team, crediting an “incredible filming experience”, going on to say that “with Fire & Ice, the more you throw yourself in and trust in their direction, no matter how crazy it may feel at the time, you will not be disappointed. You shall have the best experience working with the nicest team you could hope to meet. We need to find another excuse to work with them again!” That final wish came true for Hannah & Ollie 2 years later, when we had the pleasure of capturing their wedding!
